The old book, "The Seven Sisters" tells how the oil, auto and tire companies colluded to purchase electric train systems for the largest US cities and dismantle them, beginning in the 1930's. THIS is why Americans must drive automobiles: it has been designed to be this way. No accidental addiction, here!

I am a retired auto worker , he was talking about helping to pay my health care benefits . United States auto companies are burdened with these high costs , they make them less competitive with foreign owned auto companies . So helping US companies is a good thing , helping to increase fuel efficiency is a good thing , Barack Obama is a good man .

I like what Obama says about a pro environment stand. But what are the plans he's actually proposing, and health care? How about paying for all health care. Dennis Kucinich lays out a full plan. Obama's clips unfortunately just don't say much about the issues

I'd rather have high taxes for 8 years and pay down our debt and this stupid War. Than continue to give tax breaks to billionaires and Oil Companies. OUR NATIONAL DEBT IS 67% of our annual GDP. It's getting worse. We need to stop wasting money in Iraq which is making more unsafe, start investing here in America and education. So tomorrow's wage earners will be inventors, not another service sector job.

as to solittle's comment about nuclear power, it's not the danger of a meltdown that prevents us from using nuclear, it's the fact that it is expensive and difficult to maintain and we have no good way of dealing with the very dangerous waste. Having said that, I agree that it should stay on the table and on the minds of engineers and scientists.

I love Barack, but his Healthcare for Hybrids idea has got to go! That's just another bailout for the investors of the US automakers, who have tolerated crappy management making bad decisions. We don't need to make any deals with Detroit. We just need to set the efficiency standards. If cars made in the US by Toyota beat out cars made by GM, great.

The government taxes each sale of low performance vehicles. (Capped at a max of say $2500) And then refunds that money to companies for each sale of high performance vehicles. Unlike CAFE it continues to reward companies who do stellar work. Also rather than being merely a "stick" It's a carrot, and a stick. And it's also self funding :P
