15.09.2007 Kaohsiung, Taiwan - Hundreds of thousands of Taiwanese took to the streets on Saturday in support of the island's latest bid for United Nations membership, which has been criticised by China and the United States. The ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) said half a million people attended a rally in the southern city of Kaohsiung to promote a referendum on the UN bid under the name "Taiwan." Police put the numbers at up to 150,000. Led by Taiwan's President Chen Shui-bian, supporters of Chen's ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) chanted slogans calling for the world to back the island's bid to join the United Nations in the name of Taiwan. About 250,000 people have taken to the streets in two Taiwan cities to show their support for Taipei's efforts at securing United Nations membership. An estimated 150,000 people, including Chen Shui-bian, Taiwan's president, marched through the southern city of Kaohsiung.
