Part #3. I had friends because we shared the same activities (football, video games, etc)... but I wouldn't have nay idea how to make friends if I had to "go make new friends" on my own, since I predominantly talk to people out of use, rather then for personal enjoyment, I had no concept that people talk to one another for personal enjoyment when I was young. That is one of the large differences.

Part #2 Autistics for the most part cannot do this without extensively learning it in a dry intellectual fashion, by reading books and having someone from the social world translate it for them. It's not that autistics / aspergers can't be social, it's that they can't really understand relationships.

Part #1 The difference between autism and nerdism, is that nerds can socially predict and imagine how what they say will effect other people and can instinctively plan out out intelligently how what they say will effect other peoples emotional states and how they will react.

there are multiple tests and such to diagnose a subject. true, some are misdiagnosed but a good parent will go through the right channels to get the answers they need. there definitely are similarities between the two but autism has more negative cognitive processes involved.

my nephew has asperger's and his parents are both extremely smart. he has a high IQ. all of these classifications and diagnosis have huge gray areas. the medical field just feels like they have to classify everything and make a "cure". it's cool u r able to analyze yourself and still just be yourself. people like u r the ones that will make a difference in the future. use yer brain because so many r not anymore.
